The Raking Wakes

"What do you have for grip on outdoor stairs?"
Winter comes with these questions, I must face
fortune borne among their relentless glares.
Have you never shoveled snow at your place?
I can't help but wonder why you had fresh
onions for breakfast, and didn't brush your teeth.
We are sold out of hooks to hang your wreath;
Shop at another store for your proud flesh.
A boot tray is a necessity when
the virgin white snow you track to your home
befouls more than your stoop. And again
nature outwits you despite every care
you take. Do not deny it is aware
of you spreading salt. Tho your mind may roam
there is always the choice to use your brain.
